Thuvia , Maid of Mars : The Doll

Description

In need of some relaxation , I decided to conjure up a version of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Thuvia of Ptarth in 1/6 scale using one of Triad Toys' Tan Otaku figures .

I wanted to deviate somewhat from my previous custom of Dejah Thoris while still keeping certain unifying stylistic themes .

I suppose I would call Dejah my " Frazetta Inspired " and Thuvia my " Vallejo Inspired " incarnations in doll customizing .

I think what I find most calming and relaxing about my Barsoom themed girls is making their costuming and adornments - braiding 28 and 32 gauge brass wire can be mind-numbing . I also like playing around with stringing beads and spacers for miniature bracelets and necklaces - as well as rummaging around my " possibles " bins looking for interesting items to incorporate in the work .

Thuvia is my very first " yarn-hair " re-rooting job , something I've been wanting to do for many years . I broke only one needle during the " plug n chug " process due to the hardness of the vinyl used for the Otaku headsculpt .

I used different Otakus for Thuvia's creation , and the headsculpt was darker than the body - apparently from different production runs and the coloration of the plastic differed . My solution was to apply a light overall coat of acrylic dye in saddle brown and burnt umber to the body to match it to the head .
